This concert explored the gap between secular and sacred music by examining choral music with sacred texts that were written for secular audiences. “Profane” is often mistakenly equated with profanity, but in a historical context, it simply means that which is not sacred…in other words…secular. We performed music by composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Jon Kull (orchestrator for Avatar), Moses Hogan, Gregory Orban, and Brandon Waddles. Click HERE to download the concert program.
Building Bridges Between Nations: Krenek, Britten, and Rilke: February 23-24, 2018
This concert featured works by Austrian composer Ernst Krenek and British composer Benjamin Britten. Both men were part of a flood of composers, musicians, and others who came to the U.S. from Europe in the years before and during World War II.
Krenek (August 23, 1900 – December 22, 1991), was an Austrian-born composer of Czech ancestry who immigrated to the U.S. in 1938 after Hitler annexed his home country. He eventually settled in Palm Springs, CA with his wife, composer Gladys Nordenstrom. We featured sections of Krenek’s profound Lamentations, written for the fallen city of Vienna.
Britten (November 22, 1913 – December, 4 1976) was a central figure in 20th Century British classical music. He was a composer, conductor, and pianist who became disenchanted with the rise of Nationalism in his home country of England in the lead-up to World War II. He immigrated to North America in 1939, first to Canada then to New York. We will be featuring Britten’s Sacred & Profane, a collection of eight lyrics based on medieval English poems. It was composed in 1975.
