SACRA/PROFANA: Reinventing The Choir

Mary Ann Carr, Soprano

Soprano Mary Ann Carr holds a B.M. and an M.M. in Vocal Performance from San Diego State University. She enjoys a regional career and has appeared as soloist with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, the San Diego Symphony, and the San Diego Master Chorale. Mary Ann also performs a wide variety of chamber music, most regularly with her husband, classical guitarist William Wilson.

Having trained under experts in Gregorian chant and Renaissance music as well as performed in several early music ensembles, Mary Ann now directs the Jubilate Deo Schola Cantorum. This twenty-voice choir sings Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony at a monthly Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary in San Diego and by special engagement throughout southern California.



Angelica Eclar, Mezzo-Soprano

Angelica E. Eclar is a musical chameleon, with experience that is unusually extensive and widely varied. An active performer since the age of three, she is not only a gifted vocalist and accompanist in the classical, jazz, pop, Broadway and gospel genres, but is also a highly-respected teacher, conductor and church musician. Ms. Eclar received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from La Sierra University in Riverside, CA, where she later became Minister of Music for the La Sierra University Church. She taught classroom, choral, orchestral and handbell music at all grade levels for more than twelve years. She has maintained an active piano and voice studio for eighteen years with students ranging from age four to sixty-four. She currently teaches in San Diego, CA.


Ms. Eclar’s experience as a performer is equally as broad. She was one of the founding members and songwriters of the Christian group Promise, which enjoyed a strong regional following in Southern California. She is a veteran of the Southern California Chamber Singers, the Tomas Luis de Victoria Choir, Pacific Camerata, Ad Hocc Lovrs, Ocean Park Chamber Singers, the Full Measure Carolers, Rockin' Cranberries and sang "sopralto" for the San Diego-based jazz group, Mosaic. She is the co-founder and an active performer in Modern Songtales, a musical duo committed to bringing contemporary art music to new audiences. Recently, she was invited to perform with Bach Collegium San Diego for the XVI Festival Internacional del Organo Barroco in Mexico City, Mexico. A lover of eclectic and adventuresome music, Ms. Eclar is excited and honored to be debuting with Sacra/Profana.

DeReau K. Farrar, Bass-Baritone

DeReau is the Music Director of Selah Gospel Choir in Pasadena, Artistic Director of Hoshana Gospel Choir in Hollywood, and Resident Music Director for Epic Megalopolis Productions and their production of JUNK:A Rock Opera. He is currently the Assistant Conductor for the Verdi Chorus in Santa Monica and works with the historic Santa Barbara Choral Society as Section Leader and the internationally-acclaimed Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers of Los Angeles. His recent work has been with Los Angeles Opera, Los Angeles Master Chorale, California Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera Nova in Santa Monica, Intimate Opera Company in Arcadia, Repertory Opera Company in Los Angeles, Bear Valley Music Festival, Classical Singers’ Association in Los Angeles, and he is looking forward to his upcoming work with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Orange County’s Pacific Chorale, San Diego’s brand new Sacra/Profana, and the Los Angeles Choral Artists.

DeReau has served as the Celebration Arts Minister and director of the a cappella worship team at Pasadena Church of Christ, Section Leader and Cantor at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montrose, and the church choral conductor of the Warehouse service of Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena. Additionally, he is a Teaching Artist with Los Angeles Opera’s Education and Outreach programs, was recently the Voice and Choir Teacher for the Harmony Project in Hollywood, and has worked extensively with the choral programs at West Covina High School, Pasadena Waldorf School, Duarte Unified School District, and with Duarte’s award-winning youth gospel choir, Rejoyce. Delaney Gibson, Mezzo-Soprano

Delaney Gibson received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from California State University Northridge, and quickly moved onto pursuing her career in music full force, putting out a debut six-song EP in 2007 entitled “Cruel and Beautiful.” Delaney then toured through Europe, while performing with many notable artists including Barbara Streisand, Barry Manilow, and Andrea Bocelli.  “Cruel and Beautiful” debuted to rave reviews and also garnered praise for Delaney as an artist; The Ventura County Reporter described Delaney as “an undiscovered brilliant vocalist,” The Santa Barbara Independent said “Gibson boldly breaks the mold of untalented, young female artists playing generic pop songs,” while The Mustang Daily said “Gibson has not only mastered the guitar, piano, and vocals, but she writes all of her own songs as well, making her a quadruple threat."

Delaney continued to be honored with prominent awards throughout 2007 including: solo vocal finalist at The Eisteddfod Music Festival in Wales, Best of L.A. Singer / Songwriter Finalist, and she took home four MAVRIC Awards for “Best Alternative Song,” “Best R&B Song,” “Vocal Performance of the Year,” and “Best EP of the Year.” Delaney was given an honorable mention and received near perfect scores by The Billboard Song Contest for her songs “Turn My World Around” and “Unattached.” As a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Delaney guest starred as a singer on the FOX hit series “Boston Public” and MTV’s “My Own.” To record her first full-length album, Delaney recruited a top-notch team, first working with producer Andrew Synowiec [Marc Anthony, Aimee Mann, Aly & AJ, Jordin Sparks, Bittersweet, A Fine Frenzy] and them working with producer Jesse Siebenberg [Supertramp, A Fine Frenzy.] The result of her efforts were twelve tracks that would make up her full-length album, “The Worst Kind of Way", officially released in September of 2008. 

Paul Infantino, Tenor

A recent graduate of the University of San Diego with a B.A. in Music Composition & Psychology, Paul Infantino began playing piano at the age of 2. While at USD, Paul sang with the Choral Scholars and was a guitarist and cantor for the Founders Chapel Choir. While studying for his teaching credential, Paul actively directed and arranged for choirs at the high school level. He is currently involved in many musical endeavors: teaching voice and guitar at River Valley Charter School in addition to private lessons, playing piano at Founders Chapel, and hosting a show at Sea World.


Jamie Koottarappallil, Alto

Jamie Koottarappallil is a graduate of San Diego State University's Theatre Arts and English Literature Programs. In addition to acting, writing and directing, Jamie has studied voice for 14 years and is an accomplished singer of classical, contemporary, and Carnatic styles of music. While at SDSU, she was recognized as an International Scholar and has been honored to collaborate on and perform works in India, Tijuana, South Africa, El Salvador, Italy, Germany, and France. A perpetual student, Jamie recently completed an intensive study of Carnatic music and Bharatanatayam in India. She co-founded Step UP Theatre and serves as the company's producer and managing director, is currently a teaching artist for The Old Globe Theatre and the Playwrights Project, gives voice lessons and teaches music to babies.

Tony Krzmarzick, Tenor

A recent graduate of the University of San Diego (B.A. Theology and Music), Tony Krzmarzick has performed in Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland. He hails from the great state of Minnesota, and grew up in a small town, excelling at music and theatre in his school and church. His big break, however, was landing a spot in the renowned Choral Scholars, an elite scholarship choir at USD. While studying at the University of San Diego, Tony was also involved with the Founders Chapel Choir as a student director and cantor. Tony has been working as a tenor section leader and cantor at the Immaculata Catholic Church since 2006 and recently started a director position at Our Lady of the Rosary in Little Italy.


David Marshman, Bass-Baritone

David received his Master of Music degree in Vocal performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Since 1998, David has been performing regularly with the San Diego Opera, both in the chorus and in several roles on the main stage, including Friar John in Romeo and Juliet, Third noble in Lohengrin, Second Trojan Man in Idomemeo, the Notary in Don Pasquale, the Herald in Othello and the Usher in Rigoletto. He has made several operatic, concert and recital appearances throughout the United States, including performances with the Lake George Opera Festival, Cincinnati Opera, and Capital Artists Opera in Albany, New York. David has appeared with several professional and community vocal ensembles and as a soloist in major choral works, including Handel’s Messiah, Saul, Israel in Egypt; Bach’s St. John Passion, Christmas Oratorio, Magnificat; Mozart's Coronation Mass, Requiem; Faure’s Requiem, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah, in which he performed the title role. In the San Diego area, David was a guest artist with the Cabrillo Chamber Orchestra in a performance of J.S. Bach's Cantata 82. He is now in his eleventh year as a soloist/section leader at the Village Presbyterian Church in Rancho Santa Fe and operates a private vocal studio in Carmel Valley.

Hannah Rae, Soprano

Hannah Rae, a San Diego native, recently received her Bachelors of Arts degree from California State University, Fullerton. During her time at Fullerton, Hannah participated in the University and Chamber Singers and toured Australia and Europe. Now living in Los Angeles, Ms. Rae is privileged to have performed with many of classical musicʼs most renowned artists and composers. Hannah has toured with Andrea Bocelli as well as the Boston Pops Orchestra for their annual Boston Holiday Pops under the direction of Keith Lockhart. She has also worked with renowned composers Morten Lauridsen, John Williams, and Eric Whitacre, and can be heard on the original cast recording of Whitacre's Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings. Hannah has also been in many theaterproductions including Annie (Sophie), The Sound of Music (Mother Abbess), The Vagina Monologues (Workshop), and Big River (Miss Watson/soloist). Jason Rosenberg, Baritone

Jason Rosenberg has been involved in the contemporary music scene in San Diego for the past seven years while pursing a Ph.D. in music composition at UC, San Diego. During this time he participated as a selected composer at festivals worldwide including Royaumont and Acanthes, and has been honored to receive the Salvatore Martirano Award and the Foro de Música Nueva Composition Prize. He also works as a composer and researcher at the Neurosciences Institute. Having studied and performed much Renaissance vocal music and having spent a substantial portion of his compositional efforts writing for the voice, Rosenberg is currently writing a book of madrigals on the theme of love and war. The text is derived from epigrammatic couplets by Afghani women as well as correspondence to and from soldiers in wartime.


Lindsay Sablan, Alto

Lindsay Marie Sablan is returning to music and San Diego after two years of AmeriCorps service work. As a child of the theatre and a native of San Diego , Lindsay performed with Christian Community Theater, La Jolla Playhouse (dir. Michael Grief, music of Randy Newman), Starlight Theatre, and SeaWorld and spent her middle and high school years competing in dance, solo and choral vocal, and show choir competitions. While studying at the University of San Diego (B.A. Urban Studies) she was active in liturgical music as a student director and cantor for Founders Chapel Choir and as a soloist for Community Congregational Church in Chula Vista . Though she still sings as a soloist for weddings, she is eager to make music with a harmonious group!

Kevin St. Clair, Tenor

A native of Newport Beach, California, tenor Kevin St. Clair pursued musical studies at Chapman University, Yale and the University of Southern California. Following his professional debut as Nemorino in The Elixir of Love with the Los Angeles Guild Opera, he has since performed with the Santa Fe Opera, the Washington Opera, Opera Pacific and other companies nationwide in a wide variety of roles, including Rodolfo, Hoffmann, Roméo, Nemorino, Ernesto, Don Ramiro and Ferrando. Earlier this year, Dr. St. Clair completed doctoral studies in vocal arts at the University of Southern California, where he also has taught private and class voice. He has also served on the voice faculty at Pepperdine University, Cal State Long Beach, La Verne University and Orange Coast College and has served as Assistant Professor of Voice at California Baptist University in Riverside and at Azusa Pacific University. He currently serves on the music faculty at Long Beach City College and Cypress College. 

Dr. St. Clair had the privilege of singing the tenor solos in the first-ever peformance of Handel’s Messiah in the new Walt Disney Concert Hall for the Los Angeles Master Chorale, with whom he frequently appears as a concert soloist. Dr. St. Clair appeared in acclaimed film director Baz Luhrmann’s production of La Bohème at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, for which he won an Ovation Award. Onscreen, Dr. St. Clair was featured on the hit CBS television series How I Met Your Mother and appears in the recent Robin Williams feature film License to Wed. He is also featured on the accompanying CDs for the current edition of Basics of Singing, the most widely used classical voice textbook in the United States.

Richard Stanford, Bass

Richard Stanford is a member of the San Diego Opera chorus and a longtime member of the Barbershop Harmony Society. He is a current International Champion just crowned in July 2008 in Nashville with his chorus, the 'Masters of Harmony', garnering a gold medal as the best male chorus in the world. Other highlights include singing with Opera Ala Carte, a touring Gilbert and Sullivan company, soloing and performing with his quartet at a weekend of Gershwin backed by John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, and a nationwide tour with the 'Cornerstone Chorale and Brass' who performed daily all over the United States in the days after Sept. 11. He also performed John Rutter's 'Requiem' at Carnegie Hall with the composer directing. Richard currently solos at the Christian Science Church of Chula Vista, and directs the Heimatklang Choir, a German language choral group based in San Diego.


 

Becca Tang, Soprano


Soprano Becca Tang was born and raised in San Diego. She is a recent graduate of UCLA, and received her Bachelor's in Music Education, specializing in Voice. She also has her teaching credential and is currently teaching private voice and piano lessons in San Diego. She sang for four years in the UCLA Chorale and was also a member of the UCLA Chamber Singers. Becca also had the privilege of participating in the UCLA Opera Studio, performing in several productions, including Benjamin Britten's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and a world premier of "Lorca, Child of the Moon" by UCLA faculty Ian Krause.


Matt Whiffen, Tenor

A native of Phoenix, AZ, Matt Whiffen moved to San Diego in the fall of 2000 to attend the University of San Diego. At USD Matt was a member of the esteemed USD Choral Scholars where he was a four-year tenor section leader. In the spring of 2004 Matt received his B.A. in Business Administration with an emphasis in finance and real estate along with a music minor. Since graduation Matt has worked as Development Assistant at the San Diego Symphony and Development Associate at the San Diego Repertory Theatre. In 2007 Matt played piano and sang regularly for a raucous, inebriated crowd of college students and tourists at The Shout House: Duelling Rock & Roll Pianos. Currently, he is a Student Counselor and Partner at TakeLessons.com, which is the largest provider of music and voice lessons in the U.S. with instructors in over 400 cites.

Matt's music career has taken him many places and allowed him to experience many different types of music: from Blackpool, England to San Diego, California, from Mozart to Bon Jovi. He has been a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society since the age of 13 and has won several medals in that time, most notably as a member of the 2007 International Champion Westminster Chorus. Matt has also been active in the San Diego theater community; previous roles include Jesus in Godspell at OnStage Playhouse, for which he received an Aubrey nomination for Best Lead Actor in a Musical; Hair at the Lyceum; and a player for the Mystery Cafe Dinner Theater. Matt is excited for the challenges that lie ahead and is honored to sing next to the very talented members of San Diego's innovative new ensemble, Sacra/Profana.

Kelsey Bray, Soprano / 2009 Student Intern

Raised in Murrieta, CA, Kelsey came to San Diego to study vocal music and theatre at Point Loma Nazarene University. She has been heavily involved in the music department and has sung with the Point Loma Singers, the upper division chamber choir, since her freshman year. She currently serves as the soprano section leader. This last spring, she traveled with the group on a singing tour of England and Scotland. Kelsey also traveled in the summer of 2007 with a small musical group called “Provision” that was hired by PLNU to play worship music at summer camps and churches all over northern California. In her almost four years at PLNU, Kelsey has been heavily involved in the theater department as well, playing leading roles in such musicals as Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado” and plays such as Eugene O’Neill’s “Thirst,” George Bernard Shaw’s “How He Lied to Her Husband” and William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” Kelsey will be graduating from Po in May of 2009 with a B.A. in Music with a focus in Voice and a minor in Theater.

Kelsey is excited to be working with this amazing group of singers. As the student intern for SACRA/PROFANA, she will be singing in the group as well as doing administrative work such as fundraising, publicity, scheduling, general organization, and possibly some conducting. Kelsey hopes that this internship organized by the Point Loma Music Department and SACRA/PROFANA will help her reach her goal of professional music performance.



Krishan Oberoi, Founder & Artistic Director

New York native Krishan Oberoi received his Master's degree in Choral Conducting from the Yale School of Music in 2006, where he conducted several ensembles in rehearsal & performance, including the Yale Recital Chorus & Orchestra. While at Yale, he also served as Associate Conductor of the Elm City Girls Choir, a premiere treble choir who appeared in 2007 performances of the Britten WaRequiem at Boston's Symphony Hall, and the Mahler Third Symphony with the Yale Philharmonia. 

Krishan received his Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory, and has sung professionally under some of the world's finest conductors, including Seiji Ozawa, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Helmuth Rilling. He has performed at the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Bonn Beethoven Festival, and the Newport Jazz Festival in a 2004 performance with Dave Brubeck. Krishan has toured extensively in Europe as a member of various professional choral ensembles, appearing at venues in England, Austria, Germany, Greece and Hungary. 

Since moving to Southern California in October of 2007, Krishan has sung professionally with the Bach Collegium of San Diego, the Los Angeles Choral Artists, and the Grammy-nominated Los Angeles Master Chorale.
