You are invited to register for the SACRA/PROFANA Summer Choral Intensive 2016, created by San Diego’s leading professional chamber choir, SACRA/PROFANA and hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University. This program, because of its rigorous musical demands, is only available to exceptional high school music students. The week-long program focuses on themes of leadership, personal ingenuity, and musical intelligence.
The SACRA/PROFANA Summer Choral Intensive aims to equip students entering grade 10 through high school graduates of 2016 with a high-level choral experience. Students will rehearse and perform challenging choral repertoire, attend music theory class, hear from guest speakers such as local professors and professional musicians, and benefit from group sectionals with a SACRA/PROFANA member of their specific voice type. The week culminates in a final performance featuring choral works rehearsed during the program. The SCI Choir, conducted by Juan Carlos Acosta (SACRA/PROFANA’s Associate Artistic Director) and Keith Pedersen (PLNU Professor of Music and Choral Conductor), will also premiere a new composition specifically written to be presented at the final performance – an opportunity high school musicians rarely get to experience.
In 2015, the Summer Choral Intensive program reached over 95 high school students representing 25 different high schools in San Diego County.
What did prior SCI students have to say about their experience?
“I have found out that I have more potential than I thought.”
“I have become more exposed to a broader range of choral music.”
“I will be a stronger leader in my choir.”
“It has assured me that this is the right direction for my life.”
Past SCI students have been invited to sing with SACRA/PROFANA for performances with the San Diego Symphony, California Ballet and also in the U.S. Premiere of Disney Theatrical’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame at the La Jolla Playhouse. Students have also gained contacts in the professional music world, gaining them internships, college advice, and more!
The SACRA/PROFANA Summer Choral Intensive will run daily from Monday, July 11th through Friday, July 15th, with a dress rehearsal and final performance presentation on Saturday, July 16th. (Participation in the dress rehearsal is required in order to participate in the final performance.) There is no audition to participate in the program; however, only students with positive teacher recommendation forms will be eligible to participate. (Please direct your teacher to http://www.sacraprofana.org/index.php/teacherrecommendation/) In addition, each registered student will be assigned a Voice Placement session time before the program begins, where individuals will sing for the Choral Intensive Staff in order to be placed in an appropriate section. (Please note that the Voice Placement session is not considered an audition.) Participation in a Voice Placement session is mandatory, and is a prerequisite to participation in the SCI program. Students will also take a Music Theory Diagnostic Test, used only to place them in the correct class level.
At their Voice Placement session, students will receive music for the program that they will be expected to learn on their own before the program begins. SACRA/PROFANA Education Staff will supply practice tracks for all parts. All sectionals and rehearsals will be held at Point Loma Nazarene University.
The SACRA/PROFANA Summer Choral Intensive is a part of our outreach mission in San Diego County. We aim to present quality arts education at affordable prices to make this high-level program accessible to any qualified student who wants to be involved. SACRA/PROFANA is therefore offering the whole program at the low price of $225 per student, or only $45/day. Register before May 15th, 2016 to take advantage of our Early Registration Special at only $39/day, or a total of $195 per student. Some need-based scholarships are available. Please fill out the attached Tuition Assistance form if finances are an issue.
This year, we are also happy to offer a student recommendation rebate. For every new student recommended to the SCI program who attends the 2016 SCI program, a rebate of $10 will apply (maximum of five recommendations). This person must list you as their “recommended by”.
