Building Bridges Postcard-Carole King

SACRA/PROFANA will be opening another exciting season by putting our spin on an iconic popular record. Carole King is one of the most important singer/songwriters of the 20th Century whose influence stretches well beyond her own recordings. The program will consist of many of her hits that were famous by other performers, written in collaboration with Gerry Goffin and others. The second half of the program will feature Carole Kings iconic album Tapestry performed by the Core Chorus of SACRA/PROFANA collaborating with each other as instrumentalists and vocalists. After the success of last year’s season opener (a live performance of Prince’s “Purple Rain” album), we are thrilled to be paying tribute to another music legend.

They will also be featuring music from cultures not known for their choral traditions.

Composer Ernst Krenek, whose work we explore on this program, fled Europe during the rise of the Nazi party and emigrated to the California desert, where he settled in 1966 with his American-born wife, composer Gladys Nordenstrom. This concert features sections of Krenek’s profound work Lamentations, written for the fallen city of Vienna, as well as his Santa Fe Timetable, inspired by the composer’s love of the American Southwest.

In this concert, we are flipping the traditional programming conventions on its head. Instead of grouping music by composer, we will be featuring the poets who provide us with the text for our beautiful choral music. Performed in libraries throughout San Diego, we will be featuring the texts of masters such as Shakespeare, Dickinson and Rumi.

In this concert, SACRA/PROFANA will explore the slave narratives that helped shape this country’s diverse voices. Anchored by the San Diego premiere of Anthony Davis’ three monumental a cappella work “Voyage Through Death to Life Upon These Shores” with text by Robert Hayden, this program will touch on the legacy of slavery and will be followed by an open discussion. SACRA/PROFANA is thrilled to have the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir featured in this concert.
