In this concert, we are flipping the traditional programming conventions on its head. Instead of grouping music by composer, we will be featuring the poets who provide us with the text for our beautiful choral music. Performed in libraries throughout San Diego, we will be featuring the texts of masters such as Shakespeare, Dickinson and Rumi.

The Choral Invitational is different spin on the traditional school choral festival. As opposed to pitting choirs against each other, this concert will feature the diversity of the voices of each choir and will unite them for combined performances with SACRA/PROFANA’s core chorus.

May 19 and 20, 2017 at 7pm

SACRA/PROFANA will team up with composer Stephen Feigenbaum, whose 2016 “Yeethoven” project, juxtaposing works by Beethoven and Kanye West, caught the eye of Rolling Stone and Pitchfork magazine. Feigenbaum’s new work, created specifically for SACRA/PROFANA, will explore the intersection of pop culture and religion by examining depictions of iconic women in both arenas.

In this concert, SACRA/PROFANA will explore the slave narratives that helped shape this country’s diverse voices. Anchored by the San Diego premiere of Anthony Davis’ three monumental a cappella work “Voyage Through Death to Life Upon These Shores” with text by Robert Hayden, this program will touch on the legacy of slavery and will be followed by an open discussion. SACRA/PROFANA is thrilled to have the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir featured in this concert.
