Tenth Anniversary Season Call for Scores
Submission Deadline: January 1, 2019
SACRA/PROFANA, a professional choral ensemble based in San Diego, California, strives to awaken and nurture enthusiasm for the choral art through vibrant performances and focused education outreach.
The ensemble has accomplished remarkable things in just 10 years including numerous world and U.S. premieres and collaborations with leading regional arts organizations: San Diego Symphony, Art of Élan, San Diego Opera, Bodhi Tree Concerts, California Ballet, and many more.
SACRA/PROFANA also has performed with many artists of worldwide renown, including the legendary Irish band the Chieftains, producer Carlton Cuse, Film composer Michael Giacchino, and composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz in the development of Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame at La Jolla Playhouse.
After a successful first nine years, we are poised for a strong and notable 10th Anniversary Season including innovative choral programming, renewed collaborations with local and regional artists/groups, and service to our community through focused education outreach.
The work must be composed by a woman composer. It will be premiered on SACRA/PROFANA’s 2019 Gender X concert, a program solely featuring compositions by women composers from our time and throughout history and conducted by women.
* We use an inclusive definition of “woman” and we welcome people of trans experience, genderqueer people, and those that fall outside the binary. We recognize that gender is socially constructed, fluid, and not always easy to explain or define.
The work must be for either unaccompanied choir or choir with piano accompaniment, with divisi from 4-10 parts. Solo passages, within reason, are acceptable.
The work must be either a world premiere or, at the very least, a US premiere, with a duration of 3-5 minutes. The subject matter is the composer’s choice, but texts must either be original or in the public domain, as SACRA/PROFANA will not pay for the rights to a copyrighted text.
There is no entry fee, with no age limit or citizenship requirement.
Scores must be typeset using notation software and emailed as a PDF to email@example.com with the subject line “SACRA/PROFANA Call for Scores.”
No recordings or midi files, please.
As this will be a blind judging process, please remove all identifying characteristics from the score and metadata before sending.
Publications of the winning composition (whether through a publishing house or self-published) must contain the subheading: Winner, SACRA/PROFANA’s Gender X Composition Competition, 2019. Any required changes to this subheading will come directly from SACRA/PROFANA prior to publication.
Submissions will be accepted until 11:59pm PST on Tuesday, January 1, 2019. The winner will be announced by January 21, 2019.
Rights to the Composition:
Composer retains all rights to the composition. SACRA/PROFANA will maintain exclusive performance rights for 6 months from the premiere date (until March 22, 2020). SACRA/PROFANA will hold rights to a professional recording for up to 24 months from the premiere date.
The winning composer agrees to allow SACRA/PROFANA to present the premiere public performance on March 22, 2019.
